One man was arrested Monday after leaving two small children unattended in a parking lot for more than an hour.
Therin Puckett, 27, 108 Pelzer St., Greenwood, was charged with unlawful conduct toward children in connection with the incident.
According to a Greenwood County report, deputies responded to the parking lot of Walmart, 508 Bypass 72 NW, about 4 p.m. Monday afternoon following reports of children sitting alone in a vehicle there for 15 minutes. When officers arrived, they found two girls - one 6 years old and the other 3 years old - sitting in a 2004 Toyota Camry parked in the store's parking lot.
The vehicle's windows were partially rolled down and its keys were in the ignition. Officers learned the car owner's name by running the license plate through dispatch and paged the owner to come to the vehicle. The suspect then came out and told officers he had been inside the store between 10 and 15 minutes to return a car battery. He added he came outside twice during that time to check on the two young girls, the report indicated. Store security footage showed the suspect park his car at about 2:40 p.m. Monday, more than an hour before deputies arrived to the scene.
