For decades, she stood as a maternal archetype for an entire community.

She served as a steadying hand, welcoming a generation of new lives into the world. Now she is in need of a life-saving gift which she hopes can restore her to her proverbial bastion as an Emerald City godmother.

Nancy Cole, a 54-year-old Abbeville native, suffered kidney failure last year and has been undergoing dialysis for the past 15 months. The debilitating condition forced her to step down from her registered nursing position at Self Regional Medical Center, where she worked more than 25 years primarily as a labor and delivery specialist. She plans to hold a benefit banquet at her home church in Abbeville later this month to raise funds for medical expenses and spread the word about her need for a kidney transplant. Her goal is to find a donor who can provide her with a healthy and functioning kidney.
