While it is not yet 100 percent complete, the Edgefield Street parking lot -- commonly known as the “jury lot” -- will be available for next weekend’s South Carolina Festival of Discovery.
Thousands of people are set to converge on Uptown Greenwood for the Festival of Discovery, which emerged as one of the South’s premier barbecue parties.
The Edgefield Street parking lot is undergoing major renovations, as it will soon be used to not only accommodate jurors serving at the courthouse, but also as overflow parking for the to-be-constructed Uptown Market on nearby Maxwell Avenue.

The refurbishments to the parking lot on Edgefield Street will cost an estimated $443,000. The city is paying for the lion’s share through hospitality tax funds, although Greenwood County is contributing $100,000 in 2010 bond funds.
City manager Charlie Barrineau noted earlier this week that the Edgefield lot is not yet paved. However, the curbing and many other features are in and the lot will be available for parking during the Festival of Discovery.
