It appears a section of Main Street in Uptown Greenwood will again be closed for this year's Festival of Discovery.
The city closed off Main Street for the annual barbecue party for the first time in 2013. The closure proved enormously popular with the attending barbecue teams and festivalgoers, as there was much more room for teams to set up trailers and for attendees to walk to various events.
According to city officials, an estimated 30,000 people attended the 2013 Festival of Discovery, which had a $1.7 million impact on the local economy. This year's Festival of Discovery is set for July 10-12.
Last week, Greenwood City Council passed a resolution asking South Carolina Department of Transportation to authorize the city to close Main Street from Court Avenue to Seaboard Avenue from 6 p.m. July 10 through noon July 13.
