A City of Abbeville police officer was demoted last month following a December dispute with two nurses at the Abbeville Area Medical Center, according to documents recently obtained by the Index-Journal.
The alleged incident involved John Schreier, a 21-year veteran of the Abbeville Police Department. According to a personnel action form signed by Abbeville Police Chief Mark Hall, Schreier was demoted Jan. 9 from a sergeant on the force to corporal, a move that cut his annual salary by more than $6,000. Schreier was also suspended for four 12-hour shifts and placed on one year of probation in connection with the incident.
"The incident was investigated by the command staff of Abbeville Police Department and it has been determined Sgt. Schreier displayed conduct unbecoming of an officer," Hall stated in the personnel action form. "I have lost confidence in Sgt. Schreier's ability to lead and supervise."
Schreier declined to comment on the matter.
