Rachel Whitmire and the rest of the Erskine College cross country team has an interesting method for training to run on all sorts of terrain through all sorts of scenery.
By running laps around an oval track.
Each year, after finishing up their cross country season, the Fleet cross country runners run two events at various track meets throughout the spring.


“It’s pretty different, just because trying to run a 5K on a track with the laps over and over, mentally, it’s a whole different kind of race,” said Whitmire, the lone senior on the women’s team. “I feel like it sometimes can be a little tougher. The thing about cross country, it’s a change of scenery. For the most part, you don’t repeat laps, you’re all over the place and it’s different terrain. You’ll be on gravel, trails, grass.
