Erskine's Mike Michelau leads the Fleet in kills this season, as well as digs through 11 contests.
(ERSKINE COLLEGE | SPECIAL TO THE INDEX-JOURNAL)
Mike Michelau was originally not even on Erskine College men's volleyball coach Derek Schmitt's radar when he was out recruiting players for the new Erskine team before last season. Schmitt only spotted Michelau when he went to a tournament at University of Illinois-Chicago to recruit his teammate, Mike Kawa.
Surely, Schmitt is glad he went to that tournament two summers ago.
Not only did he pick up Kawa, he also landed Michelau. And all Michelau has done in his time at Erskine is lead the Fleet in kills last year while being named first-team all-conference. Michelau leads the team in kills so far this year and also leads the team in digs through 11 games.
"He's a full-tooled player," Schmitt said of his sophomore outside hitter. "He understands the game really well, and he's just so athletic. He's 6-foot-4, can jump extremely high and has every shot that there is so that he can put the ball down. And he can score from anywhere on the floor.
"And even when we're not setting him, he's still doing other things on the defensive end, serve-receive, one of our better servers, can be a good blocker. He brings all the skill sets to the court."
