Lander University first baseman Connor Lewis hit eight home runs all of last season, tied for the team lead.
On the first day of the 2014 season, the senior didn't waste any time in trying to eclipse that mark.
Lewis homered twice — once in each game of the doubleheader — and the No. 20 Bearcats rode two nearly flawless performances to a pair of convincing season-opening victories against visiting Belmont Abbey. Lander downed the Crusaders 6-1 in the first game, then ended with a 10-1 triumph in Game 2.
"(Coach Kermit Smith) helped me out my swing today, kind of giving me little tips to remind me of how I'm supposed to be swinging," said Lewis, who hit a combined 3-for-9 with three RBIs on the day. "I've just got to go to the field every day and prepare the same way."
Lewis wasn't the only Bearcat who was on his game Saturday. Left fielder Weston Lawing was a combined 4-for-8, while shortstop Erik Lunde went 3-for-4 in each of the contests with two RBI.
Lander's hot hitting resulted in a total of 23 hits in the two games — 10 in Game 1, 13 in Game 2.
