ABBEVILLE — Abbeville County Council voted themselves a sizeable pay increase Monday evening and shot down efforts to curtail that raise and remove health insurance for its members.
Third reading on the county’s budget ordinance passed 5-1 Monday evening, with Councilman Charlie Stone opposed. Councilman Billy Norris was absent from the meeting.

Stone made a motion to take out a $500 salary increase to County Council and remove health insurance benefits for council members.
“The raises, to me, aren’t the big issue,” Stone said. “I’m going to vote against those but the big thing to me is the health benefits. How are we going to tell somebody working 29-and-a-half hours at one of the convenience centers that they don’t get health insurance but we do?”
Stone’s motion did not receive a second from the other council members in attendance.
