On October 6, 2013, Eugene T. and Marilyn K. Goode celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary with a reception in the Silver Leaf Dining Room of Wesley Commons. About 150 family and friends attended.
It started in 1943, when Gene (in the Army) announced he had a weeks' furlough and asked Marilyn to marry him. She accepted. A wedding was hastily put together and the marriage took place in Bethany Baptist Church, Jamaica, Long Island, NY, (marital bans had to be posted 3 consecutive weeks in the Catholic Church).
After college, Gene was employed with the Virginia State Health Department where, with 37 years of service, he rose to the position of Director of Environmental Health. Marilyn was employed for 37 years as a paralegal to the Honorable W. Francis Binford, Judge of the Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court, Prince George, VA. Together, they reached this momentous occasion, 70 years of marriage.
The family members attending were their sons, Thornton Goode, formerly of Atlanta, GA, now building his retirement home in Mexico, Robert Goode and his wife, JiHee, of Appomattox, VA, their daughter Catherine Link of McAllen, TX, granddaughter Susan Goode Estep and husband Steve, of Atlanta, GA, and two great-grandchildren, Samantha and Oscar Estep.
Marilyn displayed her bridal gown and memorabilia from 1943, including a scrapbook commemorating their 50th wedding anniversary and the renewal of their marriage vows at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church in McAllen, TX.
